Background of the Study

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent infectious diseases and protect public health. In Adamawa State, however, vaccination coverage among school-aged children remains inconsistent, leading to concerns about outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Factors such as lack of awareness, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and social or cultural barriers contribute to low vaccination rates. This study seeks to evaluate the vaccination coverage among school-aged children in Adamawa State and assess the effectiveness of current vaccination programs in increasing coverage and preventing disease outbreaks.

Statement of the Problem

The low coverage of vaccination among school-aged children in Adamawa State has led to concerns about the risk of preventable diseases such as measles, polio, and diphtheria. Despite efforts by health authorities to increase vaccination rates, many children still miss out on essential vaccines due to logistical challenges, lack of awareness among parents, or cultural beliefs. This study aims to assess the extent of vaccination coverage in the state and explore the barriers that hinder effective vaccination delivery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the vaccination coverage among school-aged children in Adamawa State.
  2. To identify the barriers to vaccination coverage in the region.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current vaccination programs in improving coverage among school-aged children.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current vaccination coverage among school-aged children in Adamawa State?
  2. What are the barriers preventing school-aged children from receiving vaccines in Adamawa State?
  3. How effective are the current vaccination programs in improving coverage and preventing disease outbreaks?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Vaccination coverage among school-aged children in Adamawa State is below the recommended levels for full protection against preventable diseases.
  2. Barriers such as lack of awareness and cultural beliefs significantly hinder vaccination coverage among school-aged children in Adamawa State.
  3. Current vaccination programs are not fully effective in reaching all school-aged children in Adamawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on primary and secondary schoolchildren in Adamawa State. Limitations include potential underreporting of vaccination coverage due to incomplete records and the challenge of assessing the reasons behind low vaccination uptake in certain communities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Vaccination Coverage: The percentage of school-aged children who have received the required vaccinations according to national immunization schedules.
  • Vaccine-preventable Diseases: Diseases that can be prevented through vaccination, such as polio, measles, and tetanus.
  • Immunization Programs: Public health initiatives designed to ensure the widespread delivery of vaccines to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
